For simple measurement of concentrations and refractive indices of liquids. (Readings taken by looking through an eyepiece at a glass scale inside the instrument). Hand-held precision refractometers with focusing eyepiece, matrix scale (E model) for improved readings, soft rubber eyecups (to reduce straylight ingress, also spectacle lenses do not slip off and are not scratched), case and conversion tables. Hand-held refractometers cannot be fitted with a thermostat (up to e.g. 20 °C) and so measurements have to be temperature compensated.

-Temperature compensation scale: Compensation values can be read from the thermometer in the hinged prism cover and have to be checked against the readings taken.
- Thermometer on the prism cover displays measuring temperature and/or direct compensation values. Compensation values must be checked against readings taken.
-Occasional resetting to the actual measuring temperature can be achieved by turning an adjustment screw.
